The area around Limón, Honduras has no general medical care except for those doctors and dentists coming to the clinic from late-January through October each year. No medical care is provided during the rainy season (November through late-January) due to the impassable condition of many of the roads. Generally, teams are scheduled every other week. On a typical week 500 – 700 patients are seen and over 1,500 prescriptions are filled. The Carolina Honduras Health Foundation (CHHF) is supported completely by donations and volunteers. The Foundation strives to efficiently provide on-going healthcare for patients in the Limón and Icoteas region of Honduras.
Because this is an on-going effort, we rely exclusively on our volunteers to provide the staffing levels needed to support this goal. The typical team includes:
A Team Leader who coordinates the trip. This leader can also serve in one of the below-listed capacities.
Doctor, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner – usually 2-4 per team
Dentist, Dental Hygienist – one or more
Pharmacist – at least one trained pharmacist and one assistant
Nurse, CNA, EMT – usually 2 or more
Some teams include non-medical volunteers who conduct programs in the community or complete planned construction projects. Having a minister on the team is always desirable.
Please consider joining us on an upcoming trip. The Upcoming Trips page of this site will show dates for trips that are currently scheduled.
See our Experiences page of the website to hear what others have said concerning their experiences with CHHF.
If you would like to join a team or have questions about joining a team, please contact Chris Zawacki at czawacki@aol.com or call the CHHF office at 803-259-3513.
