Malaria Update
CHHF teams going to the clinics in Limón and Icoteas are diagnosing increased numbers of adults and children with malaria. Babies and small children can only be treated with liquid Chloroquine. Charts are available at the Clinic which describes the treatment dosages using liquid Chloroquine compounded at a strength of 20mg/ml. This chart shows Gloria Lacaya, Lab Tech dosage based upon the weight of the child.
Once compounded, the medicine has a shelf-life of only two months. Generally, teams take the 4-6 ounces of the liquid Chloroquine (sufficient for one week) and then dispense the medicine in pre-measured liquid dosing syringes with caps placed on the end of the syringe. Each syringe is marked as to when it is to be given to the child.
Liquid Chloroquine can be compounded and sent to you by contacting the pharmacist below and identifying yourself as a CHHF team leader or doctor.
